Pregame from Lumen Field: DK Metcalf out for 2nd time in NFL career for Seahawks vs. Bills
DK Metcalf is not indestructible, after all.
The Seahawks’ hulking, star wide receiver was inactive for the NFC West leaders’ game against AFC East-leading Buffalo Sunday at Lumen Field. Metcalf missed the second game of his six-year NFL career. He sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee seven days earlier, landing hard on a leaping catch out of bounds during Seattle’s win at Atlanta.
Metcalf had been doubtful to play against the Bills.
His rare absence meant Geno Smith’s top wide-receiver targets Sunday were Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Jake Bobo.
The Cleveland Clinic defines the recovery time from a grade-1 MCL sprain, which Metcalf has, as one to three weeks.
Asked Friday if the team expects Metcalf back when Seattle hosts the Los Angeles Rams next weekend, Nov. 3, Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said they’ll have to wait and see.
On his weekly pregame appearance on the Seahawks’ radio network Sunday, general manager John Schneider saw Metcalf’s absence as re-emphasizing Smith’s decision-making and throwing to everyone else.
“Geno did a great job stepping through the pocket last weekend (in Atlanta)...I just talked to Tom Brady about it,” Schneider said, referring to the legendary retired quarterback who was calling the game Sunday for Fox television.
“Not to name drop. ... I just named-dropped there,” the GM said, laughing.
“This is really about Geno playing within the system. These guys (the Bills) play a lot of zone. It’s about Geno and his progressions.”
Rookie cornerback also out
Rookie Nehemiah Pritchett missed Sunday’s game one week after he made his first NFL start. The fifth-round draft choice had been questionable to play against the Bills because of an injured ankle.
Tre Brown had also been questionable with an ankle injury, but the veteran was active to play Sunday. He and Riq Woolen, also returning from missing a game with a sprained ankle, were ready to start against Josh Allen and the Bills’ prolific offense.
Seattle’s other inactive players Sunday were reserves: linebacker Trevis Gipson, rookie guard Sataoa Laumea and defensive linemen Cam Young, Myles Adams and Mike Morris.
