Seahawks bringing back Shaquill Griffin to add depth at cornerback for defense

The Seahawks are bringing back one of their originals.

Seattle and veteran free-agent cornerback Shaquill Griffin have an agreement on a one-year contract. Griffin’s representatives from Exclusive Sports Group confirmed the deal Wednesday.

It’s worth $3 million, and potentially $4 million with bonuses, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The Seahawks are expected to announce the contract adding depth to coach Mike Macdonald’s defensive secondary in the coming days.

Seattle and former coach Pete Carroll drafted Griffin in the third round in 2017, out of Central Florida. The native of St. Petersburg, Florida, played his first four NFL seasons with the Seahawks.

Seattle has Pro Bowl veterans Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen as starting cornerback. In minicamp this month, Josh Jobe was the third cornerback when the Seahawks went to nickel with a fifth defensive back.

Seattle hosted veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas and Griffin on free-agent visits this offseason.

Macdonald was asked two weeks ago at the end of Seahawks minicamp how he feels about his team’s depth at cornerback.

“Great,” the coach and defensive guru said following the team’s final practice of minicamp and the veterans’ offseason ended Wednesday. “Again, these are great battles going into the offseason.”

Macdonald also said this about cornerback: “Now, I mean, are we not going to look to always improve our team in any aspect? No.

“We’re always going to be out there and try to be in everything and chasing edges on making us better.”
