Charles Cross away, has surgery. Seahawks think the left tackle will start opener
The one sure thing on the Seahawks’ iffy offensive line is missing.
But, they believe, only for a few weeks.
Charles Cross left training camp to have surgery in Los Angeles on a dislocated ring finger he practiced with through the first week of Seattle’s camp. Coach Mike Macdonald said following practice Thursday his four-year starter at left tackle should be back practicing by the end of August.
Veteran backup, swing tackle Josh Jones will be the fill-in first-teamer at left tackle the next few weeks. Mike Jerrell is backing up Jones on the left side. Jerrell, the team’s draft choice from Findlay last year, started a game at right tackle last season
The Seahawks expect Cross to play in their opening game Sept. 7 against San Francisco.
Macdonald said Cross wanted to keep practicing with his finger dislocated. But the team’s medical staff convinced him to get the surgery now to take advantage of he and the team still having five weeks until the opener.
“We felt it was a good opportunity to fix it so he doesn’t have to worry about it once it heals,” Macdonald said following the longest practice of training camp on day eight Thursday. “We’re looking at a couple, few weeks here.
“We expect him to be back before the San Francisco game, sometime between the Green Bay (final preseason game) Aug. 23 and the first game.
“We thought this was a good opportunity to get him right.”
The coach said Cross could have and would have kept on playing without the surgery, “but he understood the long game” on July 31.
