Cooper Kupp inactive hurt, Seahawks call WR reinforcements. Two starters return
The reason Cooper Kupp is no longer a Los Angeles Ram is why he’s not playing for the Seahawks right now.
The 2021 NFL offensive player of the year and 2022 Super Bowl MVP was inactive Sunday night when Seattle tried to stay in first place in the NFC West playing at the Washington Commanders. The 32-year-old Kupp had a heel injury entering practices this week. Then the Yakima native who has 24 catches through seven games injured his hamstring in practice Thursday. Kupp had been officially questionable to play.
In the season after he won Super Bowl MVP and earned a new, $81 million, three-year contract from the Rams, Kupp missed eight, five and five games with injuries over three consecutive seasons for L.A. The Rams released him from the end of that deal this past offseason.
Seattle signed him in March to a three-year deal worth up to $45 million.
Sunday night was the first game he’s missed for the Seahawks. His status for their game next Sunday at home against Arizona is unknown.
Seattle was also missing Dareke Young and Jake Bobo at wide receiver against Washington. Young injured his hip in the Seahawks’ previous game, Oct. 20 against Houston. Bobo injured his Achilles tendon this week in practice coming off the Seahawks’ bye.
The team elevated wide receivers Cody White and Ricky White III from the practice squad for depth at the position against the Commanders.
Robbie Ouzts back
Rookie fullback Robbie Ouzts came off injured reserve Saturday back onto the active roster, healed from his ankle injury.
The 275-pound, fifth-round draft choice from Alabama was on the field for pregame warmups, including posing for a picture in the end zone with Kenneth Walker, Zach Charbonnet and the rest of Seattle’s running backs and running-backs coaches.
Seahawks inactives at Commanders
There were no surprises on Seattle’s inactive list.
Rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe was inactive again. He could only play as the emergency third quarterback if starter Sam Darnold and veteran backup Drew Lock both got hurt.
Cornerback Derion Kendrick was inactive because Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon was back from missing five games with a bruised knee ligament. Witherspoon and rookie safety Nick Emmanwori playing together for the first time since week one Sept. 7 against San Francisco was a primary storyline to Sunday night’s game. Emmanwori had been excelling at nickel defensive back in the slot, Witherspoon’s role last season for coach Mike Macdonald. Macdonald began the game in nickel with Emmanwori inside as the slot cover man and Witherspoon outside at cornerback opposite Josh Jobe.
Rookie linebacker Jared Ivery and offensive tackle Mason Richman were also inactive.
