Seahawks put a veteran starter on injured reserve, among moves for Arizona game

This week, Jarran Reed was talking about how close his Seahawks defensive linemates are.

He said they often play cards together. Their favorite, go-to game?

“Spades,” Reed said.

The best Spades player on the team?

“Me,” Reed said.

The worst?

“Probably (Boye) Mafe,” the veteran defensive tackle said Wednesday of Seattle’s outside linebacker. “Bad.”

Reed’s week, and season, got plenty worse from there.

Friday, Reed wasn’t on the injury report for the game Sunday. But Saturday the Seahawks put their team leader and 32-year-old veteran tackle on injured reserve. He had practiced fully all week with a wrist issue. That and a thumb injury is why the team first declared him out Saturday for its game Sunday against Arizona at Lumen Field.

Then Saturday afternoon, in need of roster spots and healthier players, the Seahawks put Reed on injured reserve.

Wide receiver Dareke Young also went on injured reserve Saturday. He missed Seattle’s win at Washington last weekend with a quadriceps injury.

Reed has 1 1/2 sacks and 17 tackles playing 47% of defensive snaps in Seattle’s first eight games.

He and Young must miss at least the next four weeks. They could return as early as Dec. 7 when the Seahawks play at Atlanta, per NFL rules for injured reserve.

Seahawks reinforcements

Seattle signed from the practice squad to its 53-man active roster wide receiver Cody White and defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna to take Young’s and Reed’s roster spots. White had been a practice-squad elevation last week before he scored his first career touchdown catching a pass from Sam Darnold in the second quarter of the team’s blowout win at Washington.

The Seahawks also elevated from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals linebacker Patrick O’Connell and rookie wide receiver Ricky White III. Cody White and Ricky White reinforce the wide-receiver spot. That’s where Young and Jake Bobo are out injured, and Cooper Kupp is questionable to play Sunday. Kupp has heel and hamstring injuries, though he practiced fully on Friday.

He missed last weekend’s game at Washington. That was the first time he’s been out after seven straight starts (24 catches, one target) to begin this season. He injured his hamstring in practice last week, on top of a heel injury.

Coach Mike Macdonald made it sound Friday as if the 32-year-old former Super Bowl MVP with the Los Angeles Rams will play against the Cardinals.

“Coop’s an animal. He’s great,” Macdonald said. “It’s impressive to see what he’s willing to do to go play a game. It means a lot to him.”

With all the injuries at the position, this was a fine week for the Seahawks to trade two third-day draft picks to New Orleans to acquire wide receiver Rashid Shaheed. He will make his debut for Seattle on Sunday. That includes, Macdonald said, as a kick or punt returner.

O’Connell provides depth at inside linebacker. Ernest Jones is doubtful to play Sunday. He left the win at Washington in the first half with a knee injury. The Seahawks hope Jones, their defensive signal caller, can return to play the Rams next week in Inglewood, California.

Drake Thomas is going to take Jones’ usual role of defensive signal caller Sunday against the Cardinals. Thomas and Tyrice Knight will be the starting inside linebackers against Arizona, as they were in the second half last week at Washington.
