Seattle Seahawks

Quandre Diggs indicates he’s returning to Seahawks. Here’s how and why

One of the most popular Seahawks of the last decade is apparently coming back.

Quandre Diggs indicated on social media Tuesday he is returning to the team for which he was a captain and made three Pro Bowls in five Seahawks seasons from 2019-22.

Diggs posted on his X/Twitter account a picture of his daughter with the Seahawks’ mascot at team headquarters from a few years ago with Seahawks-colored blue and green hearts and the words: “No sources needed just my guy! @BlitzTheSeahawk”

Then came multiple reports, the first by ESPN.com’s Brady Henderson, the Seahawks were close to signing the 32-year-old Diggs to the practice squad. Nothing was official and done as of early Tuesday afternoon.

Need and want are apparently reuniting.

Seattle has multiple injuries at safety.

Pro Bowl veteran Julian Love, whose excellence after arriving in a trade from the New York Giants before the 2023 season was part of the reason Seahawks general manager John Schneider let Diggs leave after that ‘23 season, remains on injured reserve. Love, 27, becomes eligible this week to return to practice and start a 21-day window towards returning to playing.

Coach Mike Macdonald said Monday the team did not yet know if Love was going to return to practice, that Seattle would know more if he would by Wednesday. And if he does return to practice this week there are no indications yet that Love would be able to play Sunday when the Seahawks (8-3) host the Minnesota Vikings (4-7) at Lumen Field. Love’s strong play and the emergence of Coby Bryant were why Schneider and Seattle released Diggs and former All-Pro safety Jamal Adams in an overhaul of the position in March 2024.

Ty Okada had been starting for Love while Love’s been on injured reserve. Sunday in Seattle’s win at Tennessee Okada injured his oblique. Macdonald said Monday it’s possible Okada might have to go on injured reserve.

The Titans waived Diggs Nov. 7. He was with Tennessee for two seasons, though each were truncated. He started eight games in 2024 before going on injured reserve with a Lisfranc injury in his foot. He became a free agent this past offseason, in March. He remained unsigned until the Titans brought him back in early August.

He played 57% of Tennessee’s defensive snaps and started four of nine games thois season before the team, now 1-10, released him back into free agency three weeks ago.

Diggs fits on Seattle’s practice squad for multiple reasons.

NFL teams now often use the practice squad as a ramp-up and stowing place for arriving veterans without them taking up a spot on the 53-man active roster. That’s since the league a few years ago expanded the practice squad to up to 17 players including for the first time veterans of any service time. The NFL also liberalized its rules on practice-squad players being able to be elevated to play in up to three games before having to be signed to the active roster.
