Good Seahawks injury news day: Rashid Shaheed full go, Josh Jones progresses

Rashid Shaheed’s smile beamed off the walls on his way out of the locker room and into the rest of his New Year’s Day.

No wonder he was happy.

After practicing fully each of the last two days, the Seahawks’ Pro Bowl kick and punt returner plus wide receiver is full go to play Saturday when Seattle (13-3) goes for the NFC West title and the conference’s top playoff seed at the San Francisco 49ers (12-4) in Santa Clara, California.

Shaheed was not on the official injury report the Seahawks issued Thursday for the game. That indicates a team plus an independent doctor both cleared him through all five phases of the NFL’s concussion protocol. Shaheed got concussed last Sunday when Carolina cornerback Mike Jackson threw him into and well beyond the sideline boundary into the Panthers’ bench area following Shaheed 8-yard catch and run. Seattle won the game 27-10.

He was the reason the Seahawks rallied from 16 points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Los Angeles Rams 38-37 in overtime Dec. 18. Shaheed touchdown on a punt return began Seattle’s comeback.

The Seahawks’ other positive injury development Thursday was veteran swing tackle Josh Jones practiced and is questionable to play Saturday. Jones injured his ankle and knee in the Carolina game, his second consecutive start for injured Charles Cross.

Coaches have praised Jones for his play replacing Cross as the blind-side protector for right-handed quarterback Sam Darnold.

“That’s why we signed him (in March),” offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak said Thursday

Cross is officially out for the 49ers game. He injured his hamstring on Jason Myers’ game-winning field goal on the final play of Seattle’s win over Indianapolis Dec. 14.

The Seahawks signed undrafted rookie offensive tackle Amari Kight from the practice squad to the active roster this week as insurance in case Jones can’t play at San Francisco. But Thursday’s developments signal Jones likely will play.

The Seahawks have a light practice at team headquarters Friday before they fly to the Bay Area Friday afternoon.

Starting safety Coby Bryant is listed as doubtful for the game Saturday. He missed the Carolina game last weekend with a knee injury he got during the Seahawks’ win over the Los Angeles Rams Dec. 18. Ty Okada is poised to start again for Bryant. Okada has started 10 games this season, nine for previously injured Julian Love.
