Lionel Messi and two-time world champion Argentina will play at CenturyLink Field in June as part of 2016 Copa America Centenario.
Argentina will appear in the second of two group-stage matches scheduled for Seattle, June 4 and 14. A June 16 quarterfinal match also was scheduled at CenturyLink.
The June 4 match will pair the third- and four-seeded teams from Group B, while the June 14 match sends Argentina against the fourth seed from Group D. The quarterfinal will pair the winner of Group A — which includes the USA — against the runner-up for Group B, which includes Brazil.
Sixteen nationals will participate: 10 from South America and six from CONCACAF, which includes North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The top seeds are Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and the USA, as the host nation. The remaining 12 teams will be sorted early next year by public draw.
Argentina is the highest-ranked FIFA nation in the Americas and 2014 World Cup runner-up. Messi, who plays for Spanish club Barcelona, ranks among the great players in the history of the sport.
Copa America Centenario honors 100 years of the Copa America tournament, which determines the South American champion. It is being held off of its home continent for the first time. Seattle is one of 10 North American sites selected for this tournament, which opens June 3 and concludes June 26 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
“It’s an honor to welcome a prestigious tournament like the Copa America Centenario to Seattle next summer,” Seattle Sounders FC owner Adrian Hanauer said in a release. “… Hosting an international power like Argentina and a potential quarterfinal match featuring the United States (adds to the) soccer history of this city.”
