Notes: Any hope of the Sounders making a postseason appearance hinges upon continuing the momentum from last weekend. Clint Dempsey matched his season goal tally by netting three — his second MLS hat trick — as Seattle thumped Orlando City, 3-1, on the road Aug. 7. Rookie Jordan Morris had two assists. Newly acquired designated player Nicolas Lodeiro provides a steady spark to the midfield and plays his third game with the team Sunday. Seattle is eight points out of the last playoff spot. The Sounders are undefeated (1-0-1) since parting ways with coach Sigi Schmid. … Real Salt Lake is in third place in the Western Conference and is 2-1-2 over the past five games. RSL forward Yura Movsisyan leads the club with seven goals, and midfielder Joao Plata has six. In his last game, a 3-1 win over the Chicago Fire on Aug. 6, Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando won his MLS-best 181st game.
Next: Seattle hosts the Portland Timbers on Aug. 21. This time, the Sounders will have Dempsey. He missed the last matchup because of a one-game suspension.
