Opening today: Mod Pizza in Puyallup, first South Sound location for Seattle chain
Today is opening day for Puyallup's Mod Pizza, a Seattle-based pizza chain that's making its first entry into the South Sound restaurant market. Mod will open in Sunrise Village on South Hill in a storefront that's near Northwest Vintage - the wine bar and restaurant - and The Ram Brewery and Restaurant.
Mod is a pizza chain that specializes in fast pizzas made from scratch. Aside from a few exceptions on the menu, nearly all the pizzas are one size and one price, and made to order in a matter of minutes (hot pizza oven = speedy baking). Want 15 toppings with every kind of meat on your pie? Well, you might suffer from cholesterol shock, but you can have your pie any way you want it and still pay one price - or so the chain promises.
When I first reported in May that Mod was opening in Puyallup, prices were $6.88, but it appears prices lifted recently to $7.17 a pie (with a $1 discount for a cheese pie). There's also an option for a mini mod for $4.47 or a double crust pie for $9.17. Toppings are pretty varied, but sauces are limited to a red sauce. There's also pesto on the menu. A Mod Pizza will open in September at Tacoma Mall. It will operate in the same building as Blazing Onion, another regional chain that is expanding in the South Sound. The Tacoma Blazing Onion will open closer to the end of 2013.
As I reported back in May, company spokeswoman Charlotte Wayte shared a bit of the back story of founders Scott and Ally Svenson, Seattle natives. The couple moved to London for Scott’s job in finance and when they couldn’t find a coffee stand, they opened one. They built Seattle Coffee Company to 65 stores in London, then Starbucks came knocking. They sold their stores, which Starbucks rebranded as their own, and moved back to Seattle. They founded Mod in 2008.
