Considering he ripped out the ancient cast iron pipe and replaced all the plumbing and the electrical, it’s no wonder Jesse Dunagan took a good part of this year to get his downtown Tacoma brewery open.
The doors to Dunagan Brewing Co. will open at 5 p.m. Friday.
Dunagan’s brewery is built into half of the former Chinese restaurant, Shanghai House, on Commerce Street. Neighboring business, Vostok Dumpling House, takes up the other half of the space. There’s still no opening date for the dumpling house, but it is currently hiring.
Find two entrances to the brewery. One is facing Commerce Street, with entry right next door to Mad Hat Tea. The other is through the back of the building, which is up a block on Broadway. Look for the entrance near Galanga Thai.

Dunagan was born and raised in Tacoma, but spent several years working in the video game industry in California. His parents, who live here, are assisting with the business, as is Dunagan’s brother, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.
His love of craft beer is West Coast-centric, but he credits the San Diego brewing scene with launching his interest in starting his own brewery.
His 35-seat Tacoma brewery joins a robust downtown brewing community that already includes Wingman Brewing in the Dome District, Harmon Brewing Co., Odd Otter Brewing and Pacific Brewing and Malting on Pacific Avenue and Tacoma Brewing Co. in St. Helens.
Dunagan’s opening lineup will include five beers on tap. They include a nitrogenized crimson honey lager, as well as an aged stout that Dunagan also will dispense with nitrogen, which creates a smooth, creamy texture.
He also described a wheat beer fueled by coriander and orange. A pale ale will also be in the lineup.
The final beer of his list is an East Coast India pale ale, which is made with a combination of five hops, a finish of dry hops and an additional infusion of fresh hops. “It’s quite an experience. In the glass, you can actually see very small pieces of hops,” he said. “This one is for people who enjoy the hop profile of beers.”
