Dining calendar: Free doughnuts, winter menus and some goodbyes
HOUSE OF DONUTS GRAND OPENING
The Original House of Donuts will have an open house with free doughnuts, soda and coffee during Tacoma’s tree lighting ceremony, which is at 5 p.m. Nov. 28 in the lobby of the Pantages Theater. The open house at the downtown Tacoma bakery will be 4-8 p.m. at 766 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma.
The doughnut bakery is an outpost of the original Lakewood doughnut bakery that has operated on Gravelly Lake Drive Southwest since 1959. More information at facebook.com/OriginalHouseOfDonuts.
RESTAURANT CLOSURES
The Orting Bakery closed last week in downtown Orting. Owners Dave and Lisa Goff posted on the bakery’s Facebook page, “We have reached a time in our lives when we need to put family first, so sadly, we have closed our doors. We will be selling the business and the building that we have put our heart and soul into these past years, in hopes that the Orting Bakery will open its doors again at some point. Again, thank you all for your love, prayers and support.”
The Northern Pacific Coffee Co. in Parkland, near Pacific Lutheran University, also has closed. Owner Ed Cedras said via email that new owners expect to reopen the business in December.
If you’ve noticed Fuzion Cafe in the Narrows neighborhood has been closed, that’s because the restaurant had a kitchen fire. I’ll let you know when a reopening date is set.
NEW WINTER MENU AT TOSCANOS
Toscanos in downtown Puyallup has released a new winter menu. Chef-owner Tom Pantley said he’s added a fig and wintergreen salad with kale, spinach and arugula dressed in a fig vinaigrette.
Cozy winter foods also have been added, including artichoke chicken and prawns with an olive oil, marjoram and butter sauce. Blood orange gnocchi is paired with scallops and shrimp. Pork tenderloin comes with a mushroom-marsala sauce. A scampi pescatore is made with sauteed tiger prawns in a garlic, butter and parsley sauce.
For dessert, there’s pumpkin cheesecake now, with winter bread pudding and cranberry cheesecake on the way. Find the restaurant at 437 29th St. NE., Puyallup; 253-864-8600; toscanospuyallup.com.
