Vacant since the departure of Albertsons and the fall of a short-lived Haggen, the former grocery store at 111 S. 38th St. on Tacoma’s east side looks to open next year as a 24 Hour Fitness membership gym.
Joe Graff, development specialist at the City of Tacoma, confirmed Friday that the California-based fitness group has begun the application process to remodel the grocery.
Documents on file with the city indicate that 24 Hour Fitness officials anticipate construction beginning in January with occupancy possible by August 1.
According to its corporate website, 24 Hour Fitness counts “nearly four million members in more than 400 clubs across the U.S.” Current South Sound outlets include sites in Lakewood, Olympia, Auburn and Federal Way.
Never miss a local story.
Officials from 24 Hour Fitness were unavailable for comment Friday.
