A man died earlier this week in a residential fire in Lakewood, West Pierce Fire & Rescue reported.

West Pierce crews were dispatched to a mobile home in the 8500 block of 31st Avenue South at 8:57 a.m. Monday, public information officer Jenny Weekes said Tuesday.

The home was occupied by three adults. Two made it out without injuries.

The age and identity of the man who died has not been made public.

Weekes said the people who escaped the flames told firefighters there also were four cats inside the home. A firefighter went in to rescue the cats but was only able to find one of them.

The firefighter suffered minor injuries to one of his hands.

The cat also suffered injuries and was transported to a veterinarian hospital in Tacoma. The cat remained in the pet hospital where it was being treated for its injuries Tuesday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
