A rail car caught fire Wednesday night near the Port of Tacoma.

The fire was reported to Tacoma firefighters at about 8 p.m. at Marshall Avenue and Milwaukee Way at a Tacoma Rail facility. There is a parking area with multiple train tracks and several trains staged. One of the rail cars caught on fire and sustained extensive damage, said Tacoma Fire Department spokesman Joe Meinecke.

Fire crews worked to extinguish the fire, which took about 45 minutes. It then took longer to get in the rail car and overhaul it, he said.

The fire did not spread, and no one was injured, Meinecke said.

Fire crews remained at the scene Thursday morning. An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause for the fire, he said.
