Overnight fire destroys vacant building near downtown, Tacoma Fire Department says

An overnight fire destroyed a vacant building and produced a column of smoke that was visible for miles early Sunday, the Tacoma Fire Department announced on social media.

Around 2 a.m., fire crews were dispatched to the 1100 block of Dock Street, which is near downtown Tacoma.

Crews said they fought the fire defensively, likely meaning the blaze was well underway by the time they arrived on scene.

The building that burned had a mural with the word “Empathy” painted across it.

No one was injured, fire crews said.

“Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the night to monitor hot spots and will try to determine a cause during daylight hours,” fire crews said via X, previously known as Twitter.
