Update: Bus engulfed in flames on Fife in off-ramp extinguished. Roadway back open

10:30 a.m. update: The northbound off-ramp to Alexander Avenue in Fife has reopened after the fire was extinguished, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The fire was a result of a brake failure. The brakes on the bus overheated and started the fire, a Tacoma Fire spokesperson said. There were no reported injuries. The bus’ driver was able to get out safely once the fire started.

The northbound off-ramp to Alexander Avenue on state Route 509 is shut down. Tacoma Fire is extinguishing the fire on the privately owned bus, Fife Police Department posted on X at 8:05 a.m.

The post said it is not a school bus. Police will announce when the roadway reopens.
