A 5-acre brush fire burned in Swan Creek Park on Thursday and firefighters struggled to contain the blaze in the remote, wooded area.
The fire was reported about 7 p.m. Wednesday, and Central Pierce Fire & Rescue crews worked through the night to keep flames from spreading.
“It’s deep, deep, deep in the woods, and the terrain is steep and narrow,” Central Pierce spokesman Guy Overby said.
Fire officials were working on a plan to get better access to the fire, but for now, were hauling in wildland fire equipment.
Never miss a local story.
“We’re formulating plans to get a perimeter around here and keep it from growing,” Tacoma Fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said.
Tacoma firefighters joined the effort Thursday morning after the blaze crossed Swan Creek into the city.
No structures were threatened Thursday.
It appeared lightning started the blaze, Tacoma Fire said on Facebook.
Smoke might be visible for a few days, firefighters said.
