Climber killed in Mount Rainier park identified as Bellevue man
The climber who died descending a peak in the northern part of Mount Rainier National Park was a 62-year-old Bellevue man, Timothy Hagan, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Hagan’s body was recovered Tuesday. He died Sunday while climbing Sluiskin Mountain, a 7,026-foot peak in the Lake Crescent area, with two other climbers.
He fell during the descent, possibly while rappelling, according to the park officials. His companions were not hurt and hiked out 131/2 miles to notify rangers about the fatal accident.
Hagan had several notable ascents, including 18,491-foot Pico de Orizaba, the tallest mountain in Mexico and the third highest in North America, and 20,564-foot Chimborazo, the tallest mountain in Ecuador.
He was attempting to climb the Mountaineers 100 Peaks at Mount Rainier National Park and had only one peak left, according to Peakbagger.com, where many climbers log their goals and summits.
Sluiskin, where he died, was the 99th peak on his list.
