It’s an event kids and adults of all ages look forward to in Sumner.

The Santa Parade is a long-standing tradition that the small community has embraced as one of the favorite holiday traditions.

“It’s gone from a cute little parade to something similar to the Daffodil Parade,” said Carmen Palmer, the city’s communications director.

The parade has entries from Boy and Girl scout troops, businesses, local nonprofits and even the Toyz VW Car Club, according to event coordinator Lana Hoover.

“Most have participated in the parade for a long time,” Hoover said.

The Sumner parade kicks off 3:30 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 5), and travel from Sumner High School through downtown to Heritage Park, 914 Kincaid Ave.

Some participants in the parade will also continue to Puyallup at 5 p.m., with a lit version of the traditional Santa parade.

“It’s neat to partner together for this,” Hoover said. “It’s fun for both Puyallup and Sumner to work together.”

No matter if parade attendees are watching from Main Street in Sumner or in downtown Puyallup, Santa will make an appearance at the end of both parades.

“Both towns are just so charming,” Palmer said. “It gives you that Bedford Falls or ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ feel.”

Puyallup’s lighted Santa Parade is slated to arrive at 5 p.m. in downtown Puyallup near Pioneer Park. Following Puyallup’s Santa Parade, a community Christmas tree will be lit in Pioneer Park.
