For Dr. Steven Broughton and his staff at Light Dental Studio on South Hill, giving back to the local community where the practice began is second nature.
As the years have passed since Broughton graduated dental school in 1997, the price of dentistry has skyrocketed, he said.
“People simply don’t have the money to fix their teeth,” Broughton said.
For the last 10 years, Broughton’s offices in Puyallup, University Place, Lakewood, Lacey and Bonney Lake have completed a day of service where the entire staff would go out and clean up parks and beaches. When it came time to start planning their day of service for 2016, Broughton and his staff decided to help in an area they do best: teeth.
“We want to help people,” he said. “It’s difficult for people to find free help, but we want to give them a bit of a leg up.”
On Jan. 30, Broghton and 13 other dentists, as well as staff members from Light Dental, will host a free dental day at their Puyallup office, 8012 112th Street Court East.
“Our doctors will see an estimated 225 people amongst 14 doctors,” he said. “We will give away what we estimate to be about $100,000 in dentistry.”
Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Patients age 14 and older will get one free filling or extraction. Those 14 and younger will receive a free fluoride varnish.
“We will fix one tooth,” Broughton said. “However, we will tell them if we see more that need work, and give them a discount.”
While Light Dental will cap the number of patients at 225, those who don’t make it to the dental chair on Jan. 30 will receive coupons for reduced dental care.
“We see it as a way to provide dental care to the whole community,” Broughton said. “We’re here to serve the entire population. We want to help those who can’t afford dental care. We’ve been here for a long time. We’re from Puyallup, and want to give back to our community here.”
Light Dental and sponsors will have free coffee, muffins and hot chocolate available while patients wait in line.

“We’re trying to help people and take care of them. We’re doing free dental day for the whole community.” Broughton said. “I see a lot of people that are so afraid of going to the dentist. It makes you wish you could have talked to them 10 years ago.”
