Tacoma police: Man dies, woman hurt in reported hammer attack
UPDATE as of 8:30 p.m. The woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, police spokesman Loretta Cool said.
INITIAL POST: A man died and a woman suffered life-threatening injuries Tuesday in what a 911 caller reported to be a hammer attack, Tacoma police said.
Spokeswoman Loretta Cool gave this account:
Officers responded about 2:15 p.m. to East I and 58th streets after a 911 caller reported that a friend was getting beat up with a hammer.
Police found a man in his 50s and woman in her 70s with significant injuries. The man died, and the woman was taken to a hospital.
Another man was arrested as a suspect.
Police say they believe that the three people might have been living in a house near 58th and I streets where rooms are rented out.
The age of the suspect and the name of the man who died were not available.
Cool said investigators had not determined a motive for the attack, and that many objects inside the home could have been used as the weapon.
