Tacoma police arrest man who allegedly fled after fatal officer-involved shooting

A convicted felon who allegedly fled after a Tacoma police officer killed the man’s companion was arrested Sunday night, 17 days after the shooting, police said Monday.

Officers learned Sunday evening that Kenneth Wright Jr., a 32-year-old homeless man, was at a house in the 4400 block of South Asotin Street. Officers surrounded the house and used a public address system to draw out the occupants.

Wright was among those who left the house and were detained, police said.

Wright gave officers a false name, but he was identified by his tattoos, according to police. He was arrested and taken to the Pierce County jail. Wright continued to be deceptive as he was booked, police said.

After a warrant was received, police searched the Asotin Street house for evidence, police said.

Wright had been sought since Jan. 28, when police approached him concerning two outstanding warrants for first-degree robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.

According to police, officers walked toward Wright, who was in a car with a woman in the 3300 block of South Sawyer Street. The woman drove at the officers, who opened fire, killing her, police said.

The woman was identified as Jacqueline D. Salyers, 32.

Wright, who has seven felony convictions and nine misdemeanor convictions, got out of the car armed with a rifle and ran away while officers tried to help Salyers.
