Oregon sentences ex-Puyallup coach for child sex crimes

A man who used to coach youth sports in Puyallup has been sentenced to prison after accusations that he sexually abused children in Washington and Oregon.

KPTV in Portland reported that 43-year-old Kenneth Scott Carroll was sentenced Monday in Clackamas County, Oregon, to 18 years and nine months in prison after pleading guilty earlier this month to four counts of first-degree sex abuse and two counts of second-degree sodomy.

He has not been charged in Pierce County. The Washington State Patrol sent the investigation to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which expects to file federal charges now that the Oregon case is finished.

There were initially five alleged victims identified in Washington and five in Oregon, investigators said. Many were young teenagers at the time and are now adults.

Detectives said the former Puyallup Roughriders football and Puyallup Falcons junior wrestling coach might have started abusing children as early as 1997.

He also coached wrestling for the Puyallup School District from October 2006 to November 2007, but investigators said in 2014 that they hadn’t found anything from his time with the district.

They focused on his time with the private programs, Lt. Ron Mead of the state patrol said at the time.

The investigation started in 2014 after an alleged victim told law enforcement he was molested at the age of 12.

Detectives allegedly found more than 140,000 child pornography photos and 1,000 videos at Carroll’s Puyallup home, most from the Internet, but some taken by the coach, investigators said.

The Oregonian reported he met the victims in Oregon when he coached youth wrestling and football for the Colton School District and Colton Youth Sports, from 1998 to 2002.
