I would like to thank Donald Trump and his followers for their prophetic revelation. I mean it. They have revealed the dark side of the American soul and exposed it to the light for all the world to see, so that we can no longer rest in the pitiful assumption of “American exceptionalism,” pretending that we have some moral sanction to rule the world.
In fact, the U.S. psyche harbors deep strains of racism, misogyny and xenophobia, rooted not in strength but in fearful insecurity. Trump is the embodiment of our fake masculinity, our false armor, our brittle mask, hiding a wounded child’s heart.
Now that light has illumined the shadow, we can do our real work: not the work of controlling the world, but the work of healing ourselves. Not by bravado and aggression, not by shouting each other down or disrupting each others’ gatherings - for that too is the expression of the desperate, angry child - but by compassionate listening, forgiveness and the willingness to break these hearts wide open in the sunlight.
