Fans Plan To Boycott High Cost Of World Cup Transit Tickets
Fans attending the 2026 World Cup matches at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey are going to have to pay up for transit tickets.
Tickets for the NJ Transit trains that run from New York Penn Station to the Meadowlands in New Jersey typically cost about $12. However, that price is expected to skyrocket for the 2026 World Cup matches this summer.
The Athletic is reporting that ticket prices for NJ Transit trains to and from the World Cup matches will be north of $100.
"Current NJ Transit plans for return train from NY Penn Station to MetLife Stadium during World Cup are for tickets to be priced at over $100. Usual price is $12.90, making it more than a 7-fold increase for World Cup fans," Adam Crafton reported on Tuesday.
Travel to and from Metlife Stadium is not a very smooth process. It's difficult to get an Uber or Lyft and traffic makes it hard to drive. The train is usually the best option for fans, especially those coming from New York City, Hoboken or Jersey City.
The line for the train is long after games, but it moves fast.
However, fans waiting for that train will now be paying a very steep price.
Soccer fans planning to boycott Metlife Stadium games
Fans who love soccer won't be paying up for a $100 train ticket.
"$100 NJ Transit ticket lmao. I really like soccer but at this point you're more or less a sucker for going to this thing," ESPN's Kevin Clark wrote.
"Just put the World Cup in oil kingdoms from now on. This whole thing feels so gross I don't even wanna watch it on tv anymore," one fan added.
"These are the things that should be free. Not ramped up," one fan added.
"Paying $100 to get from Penn to the Meadowlands and you still have to transfer at Secaucus? Yeesh," one fan added.
"I haven't had a train ticket checked between MetLife in Secaucus once in my entire life and they are charging you $100," one fan added.
"Disgusting, pathetic price gouging from NJ Transit. Everyone wants a piece of the pie this summer, and fans are left as the only losers. It's far from just FIFA who want to take advantage of the 2026 World Cup," one fan added.
The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to start this July.
