Steve Kerr Makes Admission About Warriors' Future Before Play-In Game Against 76ers

The Golden State Warriors had the second-worst season of the Steve Kerr era during the 2025-26 NBA season, as the franchise had a 37-45 record. In addition, they got wrecked by injuries, which saw Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody pick up injuries that will keep them sidelined for most of next season as well, while Steph Curry played just 43 games this year.

Despite these issues, the Warriors have snuck into the Play-In Tournament as the No. 10 seed. They're facing the LA Clippers in the 9-10 Play-In game, with the loser being eliminated while the winner goes on to face the Phoenix Suns for the No. 8 seed.

Kerr spoke frankly about his Warriors future to reporters before the game, admitting to reporters that this might be his final opportunity to compete with the Warriors on the playoff stage.

"This is an opportunity we might not ever get again. We don't know. We're all at that stage where we have to be conscious of the finality that is possible. It's just sort of unspoken."

Kerr signed a two-year extension to remain the Warriors coach in the summer of 2024, with that contract coming to its end this season.

The 60-year-old coach has been leading the Warriors since the 2014-15 season, but hasn't had talks over a new contract yet. There have been reports suggesting Kerr might want to take a break, so his decision on his future is expected to come deeper into the summer.

For now, the Warriors and Kerr have a very real opportunity to compete in the playoffs. Winning two must-win clashes won't be easy, but at least Kerr has Curry to rely on. He also has trusted forward Draymond Green, so the Warriors will likely give it their all in this clash.

Steve Kerr has a 604-353 record as the Warriors coach in the regular season and a 104-48 record in the playoffs. He's led the team to four NBA Championships and six NBA Finals between 2015 and 2022, marking the last dynasty we've seen in the league.

Since Kerr's Warriors defended the NBA Championship with wins in 2017 and 2018, no other team has been able to win even two championships in a row. If he does end up leaving the franchise this summer, it'll mark the end of an era with ripple effects on the futures of team legends like Curry and Green as well.
