Padres sign pitcher Lucas Giolito to one-year deal
April 22 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres signed right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito to a one-year contract, they announced Wednesday.
Giolito, who spent last season with the Boston Red Sox, went unsigned this off-season. His pact with the Padres includes a one-year option for 2027. The Padres transferred right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing to the 60-day injured list in a corresponding transaction.
Giolito went 10-4 with a 3.41 ERA over 26 starts in Boston. The 2019 All-Star owns a 71-66 record with a 4.30 ERA over 206 career appearances.
Giolito, 31, is set to join a Padres staff that owns MLB's second-best ERA (3.22). The Padres bullpen owns MLB's third-best ERA (2.85), while their starters rank 11th at 3.53 this season.
The Padres (16-7) are tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers (16-7), their National League West division rivals, for MLB's best record. They will take on the Colorado Rockies (9-15), who sit in the bottom of the division, at 8:40 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Denver.
The Padres will look to win for the 12th time in 13 games while the Rockies attempt to avoid a three-game losing streak.
