Kirby Smart, Georgia Receive Concerning Update on 5-Star Commit
Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs made a big splash in the 2027 recruiting class when landing cornerback Donte Wright. Out of Long Beach, California, he committed to the Bulldogs on June 30, 2025.
Standing at 6-foot-0.5 and weighing 175 pounds, he is a five-star recruit, the No. 2 cornerback and the No. 8 player in the nation, per Rivals Industry Rankings. Last season for Long Beach Poly, he recorded 25 tackles, two sacks and seven pass deflections.
However, he hasn't completely shut down his recruitment. In fact, Rivals' Adam Gorney previously wrote that Oregon has remained a strong suitor for the defender, as the Ducks continue to look "like the team to beat." It puts Georgia at risk of losing one of its top recruits.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Ducks aren't the only team emerging as a true threat. On Wednesday, Gorney reported that the Miami Hurricanes are another program Wright is considering.
"Some close to him believe Miami is a very real contender in his recruitment and that the Long Beach Poly standout feels like a great fit stylistically and culturally within the Hurricanes' program and the city," Gorney wrote. "There is some talk around Wright that if the five-star flips, Miami would be right there at the top."
The cornerback announced he will be making his way to Coral Gables on June 5 for an official visit with the Hurricanes. It's one of several he will be taking, also visiting UCLA (May 15), Georgia (May 29) and Oregon (June 19).
Georgia has already had trouble hanging onto players in the 2027 cycle. The Bulldogs have already lost three-star wide receiver Gavin Honore and three-star interior offensive lineman Kyson Mallard to decommitments.
Following their national championship appearance, the Hurricanes are capitalizing on the recruiting trail. Their 2027 cycle already ranks first in the ACC and 11th in the nation. Flipping Wright from the Bulldogs would give the group a major boost.
Despite the growing pressure, Smart and Georgia still have time to reinforce their hold on Wright before official visits take place. However, if not careful, they could lose one of the top players in the cycle.
