Browns' JW Johnson III Sends Strong Message on Deshaun Watson as Potential Starting QB
The conversation around Cleveland's quarterback situation has not really slowed down at any point this offseason. It has just shifted tone. Early on, it was about uncertainty and recovery timelines. Now, it feels more like a wait-and-see approach, with real stakes attached to every update that comes out of the building.
That is what makes even small comments matter a little more right now. The Cleveland Browns are not just evaluating talent. They are trying to figure out what direction the franchise is actually heading at the most important position in football, and whether their current options can realistically get them there.
That is why recent comments from JW Johnson III stood out. Johnson appeared on ESPN Cleveland and offered a candid look at how the organization is viewing things internally. According to the Browns' official website, Johnson is a "partner of Haslam Sports Group, helping lead the strategic direction of the organization's business side, including media, marketing, partnerships, fan experience, and digital content." It is not a football-only role, but it is still a voice tied directly to ownership.

Browns Offer Honest Update On Watson
When the topic turned to Deshaun Watson, Johnson kept it real.
"Deshaun looks great by the way, he's done a great job, he looks healthy, he's in a great head space."
That is a meaningful statement considering where Watson is coming from. The former Pro Bowler has not played since the 2024 season after suffering a torn Achilles, followed by a setback that cost him all of 2025. At his best with the Houston Texans, he was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league. Cleveland is still trying to determine if that version can show up again.
No Promises In The QB Competition
Even with that positive update, Johnson made it clear the job is not locked in.
"We will see how it all shakes out. There is an ongoing competition. He's got nothing to lose."
That competition includes Shedeur Sanders, who is entering his second season after being drafted in 2025. Sanders started seven games as a rookie, throwing for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns. The production was uneven, but it gave the Browns a real look at what he could become.
Johnson also did not ignore the outside reaction that would come if Watson ultimately wins the job.
"If he is our starting quarterback, I know there is probably people who won't be supportive. But they need to be supportive as much as they can."
A Message That Leaves The Door Open
The most telling part of Johnson's comments came in how he framed the outcome.
"If he plays great, awesome. If he doesn't, it is what it is, and we are looking ahead to the future."
That is not a firm commitment. It is not hesitation either. It is an acknowledgment of where things stand. The Browns are willing to give Watson the opportunity, but they are not guaranteeing anything beyond that.
For a team trying to stabilize at quarterback, that kind of message says a lot. Cleveland is open to the possibility. But everything still has to be earned on the field.
