Tony Romo's Attempt To Qualify For U.S. Open Goes Very Poorly
Tony Romo is known for his football career, having starred at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys for more than a decade, before getting into broadcasting. But the former NFL star turned broadcaster is quite the golfer, too.
The 46-year-old NFL announcer has attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open several times. Romo, a scratch or better golfer, is technically an amateur. He's allowed to compete in qualifier events for the U.S. Open, which is held in June every year.
Romo once again attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open this year. However, Romo's qualifying attempts went very poorly.
Romo entered a local qualifier at Ridgewood Country Club in Waco, Texas. He needed a great score to advance in the qualifying round - something in the high 60s or low 70s. However, he didn't come close.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback carded a nine-over-par 79, ultimately falling 11 shots short of the qualifying mark. The top six golfers in the event advanced to the final qualifying stage.
Romo's dreams of playing in the U.S. Open will have to wait another year.
Romo is still known for her top-tier golf game
Romo, who lives in Texas, plays a lot of rounds with Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler, among others.
The former Cowboys quarterback has actually beaten Spieth in a round before.
"He's beat Jordan before, so shout-out to Jordan for that," Scheffler previously told reporters this month. "But he hasn't beaten me yet. I'm not going to say that he can't because he's a good golfer, so I'm definitely not going to go out and say that he can't, and we also play a lot of golf together, and in golf you never really know what's going to happen."
Scheffler is proud to call Romo a friend.
"Just to see how he goes through life as a family man and as someone who is on TV all the time," Scheffler said. "He was the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, so he has a better understanding than I do of what it's like to be in the spotlight, and I'm fortunate to have the ability to bounce stuff off of him."
"How he handles his sponsorship days or how he handles media or pictures when he goes out to dinner, little stuff like that I feel like I've just learned a lot from him about how to navigate being a professional athlete while also trying to be a family man."
The 2026 U.S. Open will be held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton N.Y., from June 18-21.
