Dak Prescott Sends Strong Message After Dallas Cowboys Upgrade Defense
The Dallas Cowboys spent much of the offseason making it clear that fixing the defense was a top priority, and quarterback Dak Prescott appears fully on board with the direction the franchise is taking.
After Dallas changed up its coaching staff a bit and added several notable defensive pieces through free agency and the NFL Draft, Prescott shared an optimistic message about where the team stands entering the 2026 season.
From veterans like Rashan Gary, Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark to rookie first-round pick Caleb Downs, the Cowboys believe they have assembled a defense capable of helping the team return to contender status.
Prescott also made headlines for his comments on wide receiver George Pickens, whose contract situation has generated discussion throughout the offseason. Despite Pickens not attending voluntary workouts, Prescott made it clear he has no concerns after the two worked together privately this offseason.
With expectations rising around Dallas once again, Prescott sounded energized by both the roster upgrades and the culture being built inside the organization ahead of Brian Schottenheimer's second season leading the offense.

Dak Prescott Praises Cowboys' Defensive Overhaul
Speaking during the Cowboys' annual Reliant Home Run Derby event, Prescott praised the front office for aggressively addressing the defensive side of the ball.
"Obviously, we needed help," Prescott said. "We went into that side, everybody knowing that's what we were going to do, starting with the staff, and did that, to then just adding as many players as we can whether it be veterans in free agent signings or in the draft."
Dallas added several experienced defenders this offseason, including Rashan Gary, Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, Jalen Thompson and Cobie Durant. The team also used premium draft capital on Downs, Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham.
Prescott said the early returns have already been encouraging.
"I think we did a [expletive] of a job," Prescott added. "Just being around these guys for two weeks, looks like they're a lot of high-character guys."
The Cowboys struggled defensively at times last season, which led to a complete overhaul under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Early reactions from inside the building suggest players are buying into the new system quickly.
Dak Prescott Comfortable With George Pickens Situation
Prescott also addressed concerns surrounding Pickens after the wide receiver skipped voluntary workouts despite signing the franchise tag earlier this offseason.
The veteran quarterback made it clear he remains confident in the relationship and work the two have already put in together away from the facility.
"I've just showed George my support," Prescott said. "We've thrown this offseason, so I'm comfortable with where he's at and I'm excited for when he can get in the building and get rolling."
That message should calm some concerns among Cowboys fans wondering whether Pickens' absence could create issues entering training camp.
The Cowboys offense already ranked near the top of the league last season, finishing second in total offense and seventh in scoring offense. With Pickens joining an already talented group and Schottenheimer entering Year 2 running the offense, Dallas believes another step forward is possible.
Prescott also admitted the offense still has areas that need improvement, specifically in the red zone.
"We don't want to be good, we want to be great," Prescott said. "Last year was Year 1 under Schotty. It's up to us to make sure we take a step and a big step."
Caleb Downs Already Turning Heads in Dallas
One player generating major excitement inside the organization is Downs, the No. 11 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Prescott praised the rookie's maturity and work ethic after spending time around him during offseason workouts.
"Spending a little bit of time already around Caleb, I love the way that he's wired," Prescott said. "I'm excited for him."
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown echoed those thoughts, calling Downs a worker who wants to improve every day.
The Cowboys expect Downs to contribute immediately in Parker's defense, potentially lining up at both safety and nickel corner while making plays all over the field.
If Downs develops quickly and the veteran additions perform as expected, Dallas could finally field the type of complementary defense Prescott has been asking for during recent seasons.
