Thunder Should Target Athletic Michigan Player as 2026 Hopeful
The Oklahoma City Thunder are one of just four teams left in the NBA finals, so their attention is focused on getting back to that championship game.
But, the powers at be would still be wise to focus on the 2026 NBA draft, because they have to keep on top of securing talent for the future.
In a mock out on Saturday, May 23, Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report names his projections for the upcoming draft. He has the Thunder going with Morez Johnson Jr. of Michigan.

“While the Thunder don’t have obvious openings now, they do face some financial decisions that could create a couple,” he notes. “Sizable team options on Isaiah Hartenstein ($28.5 million), Lu Dort ($18.2 million) and Kenrich Williams ($7.2 million) could all give this front office plenty to think about, particularly with pay raises for Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander kicking in soon.”
He adds: “If OKC decides to decline at least one of those options, it might immediately be in the market for size, athleticism and chaos-creation on defense. Johnson offers all of the above, plus powerful finishing and hints of shot-making and quick-read passing.”

If the Oklahoma City Thunder decide to move on from any veterans this offseason, adding a player like Johnson would make a lot of sense. He brings the exact kind of energy and athleticism that fits this roster. He’s long, explosive and disruptive on defense, and he has a knack for creating chaos that can completely throw opposing offenses off rhythm.
On the offensive side, Johnson is powerful around the basket and finishes strong through contact. He also flashes some real upside as a shooter and passer, which makes him even more intriguing long term. He’s not just an athlete flying around the court. There’s actual skill and feel developing in his game, too. Any team would be lucky to get him.
