Fever Star Caitlin Clark Wants to Move On Quickly From Unwanted Issue Against Fire
Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark is playing down the foul trouble that ruined her game on Saturday to focus forward. That night, the Fever suffered a 100-84 loss to the Portland Fire in front of a packed crowd at the Moda Center.
The blowout was Indiana's worst loss this season and its second consecutive road defeat. This outcome differed from May 20, when the Fever beat Portland 90-73. Clark missed that win due to back stiffness.
On Saturday, early fouls disrupted the 6-foot guard's offensive rhythm and playing time. Clark picked up her third foul in the second quarter and spent significant minutes on the bench. She collected her fourth and fifth fouls in the third period. This foul trouble limited Clark to a season-low six points on 1-for-7 shooting in 22 minutes.
After the game, reporters asked the WNBA star how her five fouls impacted her performance. Clark, however, sidestepped the specifics of her unwanted issue against Portland and instead stressed her focus on personal improvement.
"Yeah, I mean, it's hard when you foul, and I just need to do a better job of being straight up, keeping the defender in front of me, and also, if they're going to hunt isos, just move my feet a little bit better," the 24-year-old guard said.
"Yeah, definitely some tough ones, but that's just basketball. It's just a game. Learn from it, watch the film, and come back next game ready to go."
The Fever started strong, but their momentum faded quickly. Portland surged ahead to end the first quarter with a commanding 29-15 lead. The Fire maintained dominance through the first half and took a 50-37 advantage into halftime. They widened the gap in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 25 points.
Portland contained Clark by forcing her into isolation matchups. Those plays led to fouls on the star guard and points on the board for the Fire. The strategy also threw Indiana's defense out of sync.
Megan Gustafson led Portland with 22 points, while Aliyah Boston topped Indiana's scoring with 18 points.
Following the loss, the Fever's season standing sits at an even 4-4. The team is heading back to Indianapolis to prepare for their next home appearance. They are scheduled to face off against the Atlanta Dream on Thursday.
