Woodland's Mason Thomas wins state championship in pole vault

TACOMA - Woodland's Mason Thomas took home the state title in the 2A pole vault event during the 2A Boys Track & Field State Championships on Friday at Mount Tahoma High School.

The freshman cleared 14 feet, tying his PR mark. Lynden's Philip Fouse and Blaise Lovegren also surmounted the bar at the same height, but Thomas placed first due to successfully vaulting 14 feet on his first try.

"It's crazy to be honest," he said. "I've been putting hours upon hours just trying to do my best. I wish I got a PR, but in the end, we won, and I can't be mad about that. I should have gotten 14' 6", but there's always next year."

With the state title in his grasp, Thomas said his focus is on improving his mark for next season.

"I really want to try and hit 16 feet next year," he said. "I think that would be a very good goal as a sophomore."
