NBA Announces Harsh Punishment for Fan Who Stormed Court in Knicks-Spurs

Game 1 of the NBA Finals came to an abrupt halt in the fourth quarter when a fan ran onto the court with a cell phone in his right hand and attempted to stop in front of San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama and New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson.

The fan was quickly ushered off the floor by two security guard with 6:28 left in the fourth quarter and the Knicks holding a 92-86 lead. After taking the night to consider what happened on the court, the NBA acted quickly by banning the fan for life.

“The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas. A second individual will also receive a lifetime ban for his role in the incident,” the NBA said in a statement.

Cameras caught Wembanyama’s surprised look as the fan drew near.

“I’ve never been in that situation,” Wembanyama said. “I didn’t know how to act. It really surprised me, almost as much as that time [when] a bat crossed the court,” before a January 2024 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson made it clear the incident had no impact on the outcome of the game, which was a 105-95 victory for the Knicks.

“I don’t think it was an event at all,” he said. “I thought security got him out of there. I think everybody moved on to the next play.”
