Braves Identified as Ideal Destination for Astros World Series Champion
The Atlanta Braves' offense has been among the best in MLB. Through 68 games, they rank fifth in runs scored (350), fourth in hits (593), third in home runs (92), fourth in batting average (.256) and third in OPS (.751).
Under first-year manager Walt Weiss, they're 45-23, sitting in first place in the National League East, eight games ahead of the second-place Philadelphia Phillies. After missing the postseason last season, Atlanta is emerging as a serious World Series contender.
In order to make improvements, though, the Braves are expected to be buyers before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer lists Atlanta as the best landing spot for Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena.
"As for the Braves, they've been winging it at shortstop ever since Dansby Swanson left for Chicago," Rymer wrote. "It generally hasn't worked, and they're surely aware that Jorge Mateo is punching way above his weight with a 132 wRC+. A team with World Series aspirations deserves a better shortstop, and Peña is probably the best the Braves can feasibly get this summer."
In 32 games this season, the 2022 World Series MVP has accumulated 121 at-bats, 23 runs scored, 34 hits, three home runs, 12 RBIs and five stolen bases. The 28-year-old is also slashing .281/.348/.413 with a .761 OPS.
Mauricio Dubon has taken a bulk of the work at shortstop for the Braves this season, starting 28 games. The 31-year-old has posted a .729 OPS and is set to become a free agent after the season.
Pena is a younger option with more team control. He has one more year of arbitration and isn't set to hit free agency until 2028. If the Astros decide to sell at the deadline, the Braves may have a prime opportunity to pick up the shortstop and strengthen their lineup.
