Valkyries Coach Gets Honest on Missing Kate Martin: 'She's Family'
The Golden State Valkyries-Los Angeles Sparks game wasn't just any regular-season matchup. The crowd inside Chase Center welcomed back fan favorite Kate Martin for the first time since the home team waived her.
Head coach Natalie Nakase shared her thoughts about the 6-foot guard's homecoming during her pregame availability.
She admitted that she missed Martin and the energy the former Iowa Hawkeyes guard brought to the team last season. Nakase also stressed that she looked forward to seeing her again.
"We miss, like, her energy, her comedy, her ruthlessness when she helps us too," Nakase said. "... I'm excited to see her. Obviously, I miss her. She's family."

Martin suited up for the Valkyries in 2025 and joined their inaugural season roster. She appeared in 44 games and played a key role off the bench in limited minutes. However, the franchise parted ways with her on May 7. The Iowa product signed a developmental contract with the Sparks on May 10.
Nakase and Golden State dominated on Monday, winning 78-58. Gabby Williams spearheaded the team's attack with 16 points, four rebounds and one steal. Kaila Charles, Veronica Burton, and Cecilia Zandalasini backed her with 13, 12, and 10 points, respectively.
Martin recorded three points, three rebounds and two assists, with Rae Burrell and Cameron Brink leading the way for Los Angeles.
Next up for the Valkyries is a pair of home games against the Dallas Wings on Wednesday and the Minnesota Lynx two days later. They are 9-5 for the season and looking to make the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles is 7-7 and will host the Lynx on Wednesday.
