Nationals Top Prospect Showing No Signs of Slowing Down
The Washington Nationals had high expectations for Eli Willits when they selected him with the first overall pick in last year's MLB Draft.
Nearly a year later, Willits has exceeded those expectations. The 18-year-old shortstop has done nothing but produce in his brief professional career, offering a glimpse of his potential with Single-A Fredericksburg following the draft. In 15 games last season, he hit .300 with a .397 OBP.
Willits returned to Fredericksburg to begin the 2026 campaign and took another step forward. In 47 games, he slashed .300/.418/.500 with six home runs, 37 RBIs, and 29 stolen bases. His plate discipline has been equally impressive, drawing 38 walks while striking out 54 times.
On June 9, Washington promoted its No. 1 prospect to High-A Wilmington. The move was a testament to his success at the professional level despite being just 18 years old.
Since the move, Willits has continued to produce. Although the sample size is small at only five games, he is slashing .263/.462/.895 with four home runs, eight RBIs, and four stolen bases. His plate discipline hasn't dipped either, drawing six walks while striking out only three times.

Those numbers are nothing short of remarkable and reinforce why the Nationals view Willits as a cornerstone piece of their future. While some regression is inevitable over a larger sample size, the talent and production have been impossible to ignore.
If Willits continues to rake at High-A, another promotion could happen before the end of the 2026 season. However, the Nationals will likely remain patient with their prized prospect to avoid rushing his development. Rushing him up the pipeline too quickly could curb his progress.
Nonetheless, Willits has been everything Washington hoped for and more since being drafted last summer. MLB Pipeline's No. 4 overall prospect headlines a talented group of Nationals infield prospects, as Ronny Cruz (No. 87), Devin Fitz-Gerald (No. 97), and Seaver King (No. 99) all sit alongside him on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects List.
At the major league level, the Nationals have begun to see positive results with their youth movement after five consecutive 90-plus-loss seasons. Budding stars C.J. Abrams and James Wood have helped transform Washington into the highest-scoring offense in baseball with 399 runs this season. The club is also three games over .500 for the first time in seven years and currently sits tied for the third National League Wild Card spot.
Washington (38-35) has won seven of its last 10 games and will look to keep that momentum rolling Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals at 6:45 ET.
