Logan Adams’ buzzer-beating 3-pointer lifts Gonzaga Prep in 65-54 OT win over Curtis for third place
Gonzaga Prep boys basketball coach Matty McIntyre knew Friday night his team could contend with the best in the state.
Logan Adams just helped validate that.
He came off a screen and hit the game-tying 3-pointer for the Bullpups to send the game into overtime. In the extra period Gonzaga Prep ran away from Curtis for a 65-54 victory on Saturday at the Tacoma Dome to clinch third place in the 4A state tournament.
This came a day after losing to eventual state champion Federal Way, 46-44, after G-Prep’s potential game-winning shot missed.
“We’re as good as anybody in this tournament,” McIntyre said. “I’ll put my guys up against anybody. Maybe we can be in the conversation that, ‘Gosh, G-Prep was right there and maybe coulda, woulda, shoulda been state champions.’ ”
Logan Adams scored a game-high 22 points. Sam Lockett added 19 points, including two fast-break dunks in overtime.
Curtis’ John Moore made 1 of 2 free throws to put the Vikings ahead 52-49 before Gonzaga Prep took a timeout with 15.6 seconds remaining in regulation.
That was after Curtis went on an 22-2 run from the end of the third into the fourth quarter to take a 50-40 lead with about four minutes to play.
Only Gonzaga Prep finished on a run of its own — finishing regulation on an 11-1 streak, capped by Adams’ 3-poitner that bounced high off the rim before rattling its way in at the buzzer. It then outscored Curtis 13-2 in overtime.
“I think we got some confusion at the end,” Curtis senior Glenn Jordan said of the final play of regulation. “Coach (Tim Kelly) wanted us to switch and I think we had some confusion on the ball screen.”
Curtis, the 4A SPSL South champions, were one of three SPSL teams to finish in the top four, with Federal Way winning the title and Kentwood taking second after beating Curtis on Friday.
The Vikings earned the fifth-place trophy and finished the season 25-5. First-team all-tournament selection Aushanti Potts-Woods scored 16 points and Glenn Jordan had 11.
“We’re proud of how we did this season,” Jordan said. “This isn’t obviously what we came here for, but it was still a great season. We shouldn’t hang our heads about this.”
