Hong Kong’s skyline as seen from Victoria Peak. Many of the buildings seem to defy gravity as they rise up from the steep hillsides of the former British colony that returned to Chinese sovereignty five years ago. (ANAT GIVON/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, 2002)

Hong Kong: Stunning skyline, breathtaking views

HONG KONG — India has the Taj Mahal. In France, of course, it’s the Eiffel Tower. Russia has Red Square and South Africa has Cape Town’s Table Mountain. Each a treasure, and each reason enough for a pilgrimage.

If you’re flying this summer, be prepared to kiss your family goodbye at the gate. Even if they’re on the same plane. Airlines are reserving a growing number of window and aisle seats for passengers willing to pay extra. That’s helping to boost revenue but also making it harder for friends and family members who don’t pay this fee to sit next to each other. At the peak of the summer travel season, it might be nearly impossible.

PORTLAND, Maine – I was in Portland all of 10 minutes when its soul rolled by on two wheels: a gentleman pedaling through downtown on one of those ridiculously tall bicycles with an oversize front wheel and tiny back wheel.

Explore Poulsbo, either this weekend at the annual Viking Fest or any other day of the year, and you’ll come away with picturesque photos, a satisfied stomach, and a new appreciation for all things Scandinavian. And all right, a silly hat with horns.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — If you believe the glossy travel magazines, Santa Barbara drips money, and any visitor had better be ready to have their wallet leak all over the place, too. Touted as “the American Riviera,” it’s up there with Palm Beach, the Hamptons and Martha’s Vineyard as playgrounds for that top 1 percent that the Occupy Wall Street protesters are talking about.

HANALEI, Hawaii – It’s a warm Tuesday afternoon on Kauai and tourists are lining up – just a few at first, then a dozen or so. Finally more than 100 have gathered, waiting patiently. They’re not here to swim with dolphins, snorkel in turquoise waters or even learn to hula at a luau. They’re here for a farmers market.

Some people hate Las Vegas, some can’t live without it. Count me somewhere in between. I’ve visited many times over the past 20 years, both for work and pleasure, and never fail to enjoy myself.

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. – It’s a dry heat – a boulder-studded, wind-raked Mojave heat in which rock stars lie low, artists think big, Marines train, weird plants jut toward the sun like beseeching biblical figures and climbers cling to granite walls like insects stuck to flypaper, except the climbers are way happier.
