The readers have spoken. ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ is the TNT’s May book club selection

The results are in and the first book The News Tribune Book Club will be reading, during May, is “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng.

The 2017 novel was recently made into a Hulu series, but the story is worth revisiting even if you’ve read it before.

It is the second novel from the author and takes place in Ohio where Ng grew up.

It centers on two families from different walks of life who find themselves living in 1990s Shaker Heights, where on the outside everything appears perfect. The grass is cut to a set length, families all get along and children live happy lives. These appearances are deceiving, as hiding under the well manicured image lies deeper conflict. Tackling some heady themes and with compelling characters, it is a great start to the book club.

It was an incredibly close vote with “Dune” falling just behind. Never fear, though, the Frank Herbert novel will be the top contender for our book for June.

Regarding “Little Fires, you can join our Facebook group to discuss as you read as well as get up-to-date information about the book club, including details of a discussion which will be hosted at the end of May.

If you are looking for where to get the book, King’s Books in Tacoma is still delivering books even as their doors are closed.

Happy reading!
