TNT Diner

It’s takeout time. Pierce County, South Sound restaurants serving food and drinks to-go

UPDATE 11/19/2020: This list was created in March 2020 and updated regularly through June, when dining rooms slowly reopened across Washington. Though some places have sadly closed, and others might not serve during this fall’s partial lockdown, it remains a robust guide to locally owned South Sound restaurants, cafes and breweries.

When ordering takeout, it’s always best to call the restaurant directly.

The News Tribune has also been building takeout guides by neighborhood for Tacoma, with more on the way: Dome/McKinley/Museum, Hilltop, North End, West End, South Tacoma.

TAKEOUT PIERCE COUNTY, SOUTH KING COUNTY AND THE SOUTH SOUND

ORIGINAL POST: As news trickled out of Ohio and Illinois, then New York, Massachusetts and California, the hospitality industry and its more than 350,000 workers across Washington awaited the formal shock and braced for the unknown.

Gov. Jay Inslee delivered the formal blow on March 16, ordering that all restaurants and bars must close in an effort to curb the spread of coronavirus. Inslee offered a caveat: Carryout and delivery would be permitted.

Eateries across Pierce County reacted swiftly, with many sharing plans and thoughts on social media within hours. By Monday afternoon, the TNT Diner Instagram was flooded with such posts. Some were somber, some hopeful and appreciative, others notably despondent. A few flowed with humor.

Many breweries and taprooms are discounting their packaged beer and growlers. A few restaurants have added family meals that feed two to six people at reasonable prices. Even ice cream shops are trying their best to serve you.

Some restaurants have never offered takeout but will get creative in the coming days. Others have already laid off staff in an effort to allow the workers to file for unemployment, including El Gaucho and McMenamin’s Elks Temple, though they hope to reopen with as many of the same staff as possible.

At The Table on Sixth Avenue, known for its communal dining space, chef and owner Derek Bray wrote on Instagram that they walked through this likely scenario that weekend.

“We were not blindsided by this,” he said, though unemployment is “unlikely” to match his staff’s current wages.

Down the street at Locust Cider, which operates several locations in Washington, founder Jason Spears said on Instagram: “This is going to hurt us, and I’m sure many of you are also feeling significant impacts, either financial or emotional. We aren’t therapists or financial planners here at Locust, but I like to think we can help each other out because we’re a family ... Small business is fragile, and this is the biggest challenge I have personally ever faced.”

Tim Bartz, the owner of The Koi and Happy Teriyaki in Fife and Dupont has decided to stay open at all three locations. As for the potential uptick in delivery, he told me last week, “It isn’t enough to offset the lack of diners.”

Small businesses rely on community support on good days. Now, they need you more than ever. And heck, you probably need them, too.

Where can you still find food (and alcohol)? Here is a running list of restaurants, breweries, bakeries, coffee shops and cafes open for takeout and in many cases delivery. Many food trucks continue to hit the pavement: follow along with the Street Food Finder app. As of March 25, restaurants with full liquor licenses can now offer beer, wine and spirts to-go, too.

Know a business that’s open but missing from this ever-growing list? Drop me a line, or message TNT Diner on Instagram (@tnt_diner), Twitter (@tntdiner) or Facebook, and I’ll be sure to confirm details and add it here.
