Restaurants reopening as Pierce County approved for Phase 2

It’s been 80 long days, but restaurants in and around Tacoma are ready to serve you once again.

Pierce County was approved Friday to enter Phase 2 of the state’s recovery plan. County officials submitted the application on June 2.

“Customers are already here,” Russ Heaton, the owner of Doyle’s Public House in Tacoma told The News Tribune just after 11 a.m., exactly a half hour after the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department email landed in inboxes.

The popular watering hole on St. Helens Avenue has eight tables inside and two outside on a small sidewalk patio. Per the governor’s guidelines, restaurants can fill only half of their normal capacity, tables must be spaced at least six feet apart or involve some sort of physical barrier, and only parties of five are permitted.

Bar stools will remain empty and cordoned off until Phase 3, where seven counties have moved this week. In total, 26 counties are now reopened with restrictions under Phase 2 guidelines. King County has begun a modified version of Phase 1, while five counties remain fully in Phase 1.

Though delighted, Heaton admitted he and his staff were feeling that nervous excitement and adrenaline that pulses through restaurants on their first night of service.

They are striving to “get everything exactly right” and are “sweating the smallest details.”

On South Tacoma Way, The Church Cantina shared in an Instagram post that it, too, would open today at 2 p.m. Takeout service will continue, and hours will remain truncated for now.

“Welcome to Phase 2!” the post read, with a scannable QR code to its menu online to allow for contactless ordering, even while dining at the restaurant. “Please be patient with us as we slowly roll back into things. We are excited to see you all and do what we love.”

On Pacific Avenue, where a small group of vandals damaged a handful of businesses under the shield of a peaceful protest against police brutality and the death of George Floyd, Indochine was also preparing to reopen tonight.

At first, owner Russel Brunton told The News Tribune in a text message that he and his team had some final kinks to work out before they would reopen. Following an early afternoon meeting with front- and back-of-house staff, he responded, “Our managers are super motivated to reopen. They are preparing and calling additional staff in right now, and we will seat a few people after all!”

In Central Tacoma’s usually bustling Sixth Avenue business district, Shakabrah Java will open Saturday at 8 a.m. Owner Philip Panagos said sister restaurant The Social on the Thea Foss Waterway will also open tomorrow at 11 a.m.

“Lots to do, gotta run!” he said in a brief email with this news.

At least a couple of breweries have also announced they would open Friday: 7 Seas opened at 2 p.m. and Narrow Brewing at noon.

“We’re finally open for in-house consumption!” said Narrows in an Instagram post shortly before the hour. “We’ll continue to practice social distancing and intense sanitization of the tasting room.”

In Gig Harbor, Katie Doherty said two of the three restaurants she owns with Thad Lyman will open this weekend. Tonight, Brix 25 will open for dinner at 4:30 p.m., while NetShed No. 9, known for its breakfast and brunch, will open Saturday at 8 a.m. with the reception desk moved outside. Both restaurants will continue the same days of operation as they have during the takeout era: Thursday to Sunday for Brix and Thursday to Monday for NetShed.

Despite removing tables to allow for social distancing and half-capacity rules, said Doherty, “We wanted the aesthetic of the restaurant to be maintained, and I believe we have.”

Guests will handle single-use menus — one of the guidelines for restaurants to reopen — which will be recycled.

“Tonight will be fun and challenging as we deal with one server touching the table only,” she added, which differs from Brix’s typical “cohesive style of service.”

They have been preparing for this moment, she said.

“All and all we are excited and ready.”
