A guide to vegan eats in Tacoma, from tofu steak and gravy to vegan egg sandos

Tacoma has a surprising amount of vegan options.

Most restaurants have one or two vegan dishes (not including a sad, plain side salad), and many dishes can be made vegan with substitutions — for example, lots of the pizza joints in this list offer vegan cheese.

We’ve come up with a list of 11 Tacoma restaurants with the best vegan options, including breakfast places, casual fast food counters, burger joints and bars.

Some restaurants offer dishes that are naturally vegan, some offer dishes with imitation meat and cheese, and some can make many dishes vegan upon request.

It’s also relevant to note that vegan food isn’t just for vegans – it of course accommodates vegetarians, but can also cater to those who are lactose intolerant or trying to eat more plant-based in general.

With all the eggs, meat, cheese, milk, etc. that go into common restaurant breakfast foods, vegans are often left to choose from some oatmeal, dry toast or a fruit cup. Luckily, the Hob Nob has vegan egg and meat substitutions to fix that problem. The Vegan Egg Breakfast comes with tofu eggs-stitute, vegan apple sage sausage or vegan chorizo sausage. Tofu eggs-stitute also make up a vegan scramble, along with black beans, spinach, mushrooms, onions, pico de gallo and avocado. There’s also a vegan skillet and a vegan bagel sandwich. Plus, the Hob Nob is open to making other dishes vegan upon request.

Howdy Bagel

This beloved and busy bagel joint in South Tacoma offers vegan cream cheese and a sandwich called the Happy Hippie with vegan egg, arugula, spicy tomato jam, vegan cheddar and smashed avocado. Plus, the hand-rolled bagels are vegan themselves.

Happy Belly Eatery and Juice Bar

This juice bar in downtown Tacoma, which recently expanded its hours to a pre-COVID schedule of 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., has quite a few vegan food and drink options, and they are labeled as such on the menu. There are two types of vegan avocado toast, vegan oatmeal, a vegan breakfast sandwich with vegan egg, sausage and cheese and a vegan breakfast burrito with black beans, vegan cheddar, vegan egg and sausage, housemade hot sauce, avocado and red onion. The West Thai Grain Bowl is also vegan, and comes with salad greens, brown rice, pineapple, cabbage, red onion, black beans, parsley, cilantro, avocado, cucumber and peanuts. Plus, Happy Belly has vegan cream cheese, two types of vegan butter and many vegan snacks (including Port Orchard-based Dude’s Donuts).

Lunch/Dinner

Quickie Too

There are also salads, burgers, sandwiches and wraps with different types of tofu, seitan and blends of millet and quinoa. Vegan sides include chili, spring rolls, fried sweet plantains, cornbread and hush puppies. Vegan cookies and pie round out the desserts.
