High-end dog palaces will star at Tacoma Home & Garden Show

Just when winter seems like it’s here to stay, mercy arrives in the form of home and garden show season.

Kicking off the season this week is the Tacoma Home & Garden Show. It fills the Tacoma Dome Jan. 23-26.

Hundreds of vendors will sell you decks, gutters, greenhouses, fencing and just about anything else you could think of for an addition, renovation or upgrade.

The popular marketplace returns this year with a new addition: crafts people, including woodworkers, ceramicists, printers, jewelers and others.

Jump starting spring are the display gardens. This year’s creators include Father Nature Landscapes, Olympic Landscape and Nature Perfect Landscapes.

You can take a little green home with you. Several vendors will be selling plants at the show.

Doghouse palaces

New this year is Barkitecture. Yes, the home and garden renovation craze has gone to the dogs.

Builders are creating high-end doghouses for the show. The partially complete structures will then be styled and finished by teams made of local “movers and shakers.”

Teams include the Tacoma Defiance soccer team, Peninsula Pony Club and the AR Workshop Gig Harbor, a guided DIY space.

The doghouses will be auctioned off with proceeds going to a local animal charity: Sunny Sky’s Animal Rescue and Hospital in Puyallup. The facility is the largest no-kill animal shelter in Washington.

Local gardening experts speak

Show speakers are a who’s who of local gardening personalities. They will speak multiple times over the show’s run.

Garden designer and author Sue Goetz will speak on water-wise plants, low maintenance gardens, gardening for pollinators and container gardens.

Gardening columnist and author Marianne Binetti will offer advice for gardening in all four seasons and growing healthy houseplants.

TV and radio personality Ciscoe Morris will talk about indispensable garden plants and attracting hummingbirds.

Beth Wilson and Liz Morrow will discuss interior design and home organization.

Once entry is paid, attendees can attend seminars for free.
