New shops at Tacoma Mall and the former Pier 1 location set to open in the near future

Following the opening this week of Nordstrom Rack at the Tacoma Mall, plans are rolling along for other portions of the mall’s redevelopment after the exit of a key tenant and the demolition of its space.

In 2018, officials with Simon Property Group submitted plans to the city of Tacoma showing a redeveloped section of the mall property where the Sears store used to be, including shops, restaurants, a redesigned street entrance and a theater.

Sears closed its Tacoma Mall store in 2018 and the site was demolished in 2019.

Here’s what’s happened so far, and what’s still to come:

Nordstrom Rack: Opened Sept. 14.

Total Wine & More: Located next door to Nordstrom Rack in a new retail strip built in the former Sears parking area, is set to open Sept. 23, according to Tacoma Mall’s marketing director.

Ulta Beauty: In the same area as Total Wine & More and Nordstrom Rack, the store is set to open in November, according to Tacoma Mall and Ulta Beauty officials.

Page Cook, director of marketing and business development for Tacoma Mall, told The News Tribune via email that “other development projects” would be coming soon “and will be announced at a later date.”

Is a theater complex part of those plans?

As of Tuesday, Cook wrote that there was “no information regarding Marcus Theatres at this time.”

Marcus Theatres first announced it had abandoned plans for the project in its 2020 annual report issued in March, though a representative for the company in April held out the possibility that talks were continuing.

On Wednesday, Marcus media representative Mari Randa told The News Tribune via email in response to questions, “We are not moving forward with the project in Tacoma as it is no longer in our best interest. Simon, the mall owner and developer, is aware of this as well.”

Another project that benefits from its proximity to the mall’s new buildings is moving ahead at the former Pier 1 store location, 4301 S. Steele St. Pier 1 exited the Tacoma market just as the pandemic started in 2020.

Permits filed with the city Sept. 8 showed Jersey Mike’s set to occupy that location.

Kyle Potvin, media representative for the sandwich chain, told The News Tribune via email, “The location is expected to open late Q4 2021 or early Q1 2022.”
