Amazon on seasonal hiring spree as it continues to grow its footprint in Pierce County

Pierce County plays a key role in Amazon when it comes to distribution sites, with 33 percent of its seasonal jobs now available in the state located in the Tacoma-Lakewood area.

Amazon on Tuesday increased its footprint yet again in Pierce County with the announcement of a new, 520,000-square-foot sorting center planned in Fife in partnership with the Puyallup Tribe, with plans for more than 500 workers there.

Earlier this year, Amazon announced new delivery stations in Frederickson and Lakewood, smaller sites that also hire hundreds.

Amazon already had fulfillment center locations in DuPont, Sumner and Tacoma and is rapidly becoming one of the county’s largest employers, ranking No. 13 in the 2020 Major Employers List produced by the Economic Development Board of Tacoma-Pierce County. Compared with 2019, Amazon added 600 full-time jobs in the county to its roster in 2020 for an estimated total of 1,800 workers at that time.

This week, the company also announced it was hiring seasonal workers to help through the holidays at its Washington locations, with 2,300 jobs available in the state and 775 of those in the Tacoma-Lakewood area.

“We are proud to be offering a huge range of full-time, part-time, and now seasonal jobs with great pay and benefits,” said Alicia Boler Davis, senior vice president, Global Customer Fulfillment, in Monday’s announcement.

The company said the jobs offer average starting pay of $18 per hour, sign-on bonuses up to $3,000 and an additional $3 per hour depending on shifts in many locations.
