Another big-name retailer set to come to Tacoma Mall with new store
Tacoma Mall’s transformation in a post-Sears and eventually, post-pandemic world, continues.
On Friday, the mall’s new Ulta Beauty store opened in the complex that also recently saw the opening of Nordstrom Rack and Total Wine & More.
Pre-application plans also have been filed with the city of Tacoma for a $2.4 million project that would add a Kohl’s department store to the mall. The plans were filed in early November.
Construction is estimated to begin in April, according to the permit information, though that is subject to change.
Since the demolition of Sears in 2019, the mall has been in the process of building momentum on its redevelopment that launched in 2018 with plans for new shops, restaurants, a redesigned street entrance and a theater.
Plans for Marcus Theatre at the mall were shelved, with that decision announced in 2021.
Kohl’s currently has 19 stores in Washington, with locations including Lacey, Gig Harbor and Puyallup.
The retailer has adapted to ever-changing retail challenges via partnerships with Amazon for processing returns and Sephora with 200 in-store shops nationwide and plans for hundreds more.
Kohl’s also is part of the growing holiday list of retailers that have announced they will be closed this Thanksgiving. Target on Monday announced the Thanksgiving Day closure will be permanent for its stores moving forward.
