A national clothing retailer is shutting its doors in Tacoma.

The Gap, 4502 S. Steele St. in the Tacoma Mall, will end operations this summer. A company representative confirmed the plans Friday in response to questions from The News Tribune.

In an emailed statement, the company said, “In October 2020, Gap Inc. shared plans to close approximately 350 of Gap and Banana Republic stores by the end of 2023, with the goal of having a smaller and healthier fleet of stores.

“The closure of our Tacoma Mall Gap store is in support of these efforts.”

The store’s last day is set for Aug. 24.

The departure is the latest in an ongoing retail shuffle at and near the mall.

Gene Juarez Salon and Spa left the mall in February for a new venue in downtown Tacoma.

Earlier this year, plans were announced for White Barn Candle Co., affiliated with Bath & Body Works, to join the mall’s roster, as well as UK-based JD Sports revamping and rebranding its Finish Line space. Jollibee also announced plans to open its second restaurant in Washington state at the Tacoma Mall.

Last fall Kohl’s launched its first Tacoma store at the mall. It joined Nordstrom Rack, Ulta Beauty and Total Wine & More as part of the mall’s new space made possible by the departure and later demolition of Sears in 2019. Jewelry store Lovisa also opened a new store in the mall in 2022.

Jersey Mike’s Subs, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Xfinity Store by Comcast now occupy the former Pier 1 site nearby.

Not far away, new apartments are planned at 4218 S. Steele St., and a future Super Chix site is planned at the former Adriatic Grill site, 4201 S. Steele St., Suite C, Tacoma.
